Selected research and artistic practice

ASHRAELLEN

Independent writer and artistic researcher

I use books, texts, video and human–AI working systems as different instruments for investigating how reality is perceived, modelled and transmitted — and how our understanding changes as more layers of mediation appear between a person and what they are trying to understand.

01

Research position

My work begins not with a theory to be proved, but with observation and a question. I am interested in how a person constructs a picture of reality through perception, memory, language, belief, social systems and the explanations they create for themselves.

For me, a work does not have to be a container for a conclusion that already exists. A book, text or video can become a place where the thought itself continues to move. The work therefore records a present state of understanding rather than a final system.

MONOLITH — research through literature

BETON / SLUDGE / GAS

A system seen through human experience

MONOLITH is a three-volume literary-philosophical dystopian cycle concerned with control, memory, language, systemic pressure and the production of normality.

I am interested not only in how a system controls a person from the outside, but in the point at which an environment enters language, habit, fear, memory and the boundaries of what feels acceptable — until a constructed version of reality begins to feel natural.

Here, the research does not happen first and then become illustrated by fiction. It develops inside the literary form itself — through scenes, procedures, contradictions, memory and the lived experience of people inside the system.

Public practice as a field of observation

In my public practice, philosophical video, short texts, essays, observations and other digital forms work as different ways of isolating a question and seeing what happens to it outside the long form of a book.

Anchoring Thoughts

A series of short public observations in which one question or inner mechanism is brought into a deliberately compact form. The current selection moves through acceptance of fact and the end of an unnecessary war with reality, subtle understanding, the distinction between fact and the story we keep running in our heads, calm witnessing, and the boundary between a living person and their image.

Language and human–AI methodology

This line did not begin as a separate technology project or as an attempt to make AI the centre of my practice. It grew out of a practical problem of authorship: how to carry long literary works into languages I do not know well enough without giving a machine the authority to decide what matters in the text.

This is prior practice and the methodological genealogy of the present enquiry — not the proposed artwork and not a claim of technical novelty.

First

Ashraellen Transcreation Protocol — ATP

ATP emerged as a human-directed way of working with AI-assisted literary transcreation: the machine can absorb part of the linguistic complexity, comparison work and continuity control, while semantic and artistic decisions remain with the author.

The central principle is simple: complexity may be delegated; canonical authority cannot.

Then

Voiceprint

Work with ATP led to another problem. A text could be natural, correct and even smoother than the original — while leaving one question unresolved: is the author still there?

Voiceprint grew from an attempt to understand authorship not as a set of stylistic features, but as a history of decisions, constraints, semantic priorities and continuity across the work.

Current point of enquiry

Where Does Understanding Reside?

If everything we call reality reaches us through perception, language and models, what happens when those models themselves become distributed across human and artificial systems?

I do not treat this question as a theory waiting to be confirmed. It is the present point in a longer enquiry. The next answer may make it more precise, break part of the current model, or lead to a completely different question.
